So You Just Aped In: The Rookie Dragon's Checklist Before Your First Base Run

Welcome, rookie. You came from a centralized exchange, or maybe another chain, and someone in a group chat said the words "Most Based Dragon on Base" and here you are. Respect. But before you go full degen, run through this checklist. It's the difference between becoming a legend and becoming a cautionary tale someone screenshots.
1. Get on Base the Boring, Correct Way
Base is Coinbase's Layer 2, which means onboarding is friendlier than most of crypto. You can bridge ETH from mainnet, withdraw directly from Coinbase to Base, or use a supported exchange. Don't rush it. Send a small test transaction first. Every veteran has a story about the time they didn't; don't write yours this week.
2. Set Up Your Wallet Like an Adult
Self-custody wallet — MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, Rabby, pick your flavor. Write your seed phrase on paper. PAPER. Not a notes app, not a screenshot, not a Google Doc titled "definitely not my seed phrase." Store it somewhere a house fire or a curious roommate can't reach. Anyone who asks for it is a thief, full stop.
3. Bookmark Everything, Click Nothing
Scammers buy ads and clone sites. Type the URL yourself or use a bookmark. If a link slides into your DMs promising an "exclusive ChadRizard airdrop," that's not luck — that's a phishing net.
4. Verify the Contract Address
Lookalike tokens are the counterfeit jerseys of crypto. Always grab the official contract address from the project's verified channels — the actual website, the pinned announcement — and confirm it before you swap. A token with a suspiciously similar name and zero liquidity is a decoy egg.
5. Understand Slippage and Gas Before You Swap
First trade going to fail at 2 a.m.? It happens to everyone. Learn what slippage tolerance does, keep a little ETH on Base for gas, and don't rage-swap six times in a row. Patience is a holder trait; so is reading the transaction preview.
6. Take Profits Thinking Seriously — Early
Nobody wants to hear this on day one, but decide now what your plan is: what you'd never sell, what you might trim, and what would make you reconsider. Dragons with a plan don't make panic decisions in a red candle. Dragons without a plan become pigeons by Wednesday.
7. Learn to Read the Room
Every community has a rhythm. Lurk before you post. Find the official channels, note who's been around forever, and be suspicious of anyone DMing you first with "opportunities." Real holder culture is loud, funny, and doesn't need to cold-call you.
8. Size Like a Grown-Up
Only risk what you can watch dip 40% without spiraling. That's not weakness — that's what lets you actually hold. The folks who over-allocate are the ones who paper-hand at the exact bottom.
9. Know the Lingo
Paper hands: sells early. Diamond hands: doesn't. Based: unbothered and correct. Degen: all of us, affectionately. Learn the vocabulary and you'll stop feeling like you walked into a movie halfway through.
10. Remember Why You Came
You didn't show up for a savings account. You showed up for the fire, the community, and the story. Hold like you mean it, verify like a skeptic, and welcome to the nest.
Not financial advice. Security advice, mostly.
